Who’s to say if there’s any truth in horoscopes. If the events of the past few weeks have taught us anything, it’s that life is unpredictable and doesn’t always color inside the lines. Which is why it’s sometimes nice to hear a song like Frederick the Younger’s “Horoscope”, which rocks in a straightforward, comforting fashion but still comes with its own small surprises. Chief among these surprises is the lush voice of lead singer Jenni Cochran, which practically struts atop the blues-inspired melody before eventually giving way to a soaring guitar solo — yet another welcome surprise in a song that lets its more anthemic moments evolve naturally. Cochran describes the single as “a snapshot of the romanticism of youth,” and the refreshing lack of irony in the music sends that point home.
Don’t be too hard on yourself if you haven’t yet heard of Frederick the Younger. The Louisville-based quintet has only one EP, this year’s Warm Front, to their name, but they’ll be looking to take 2017 by storm with the release of their debut full-length album, Human Child. The album drops on February 3rd, 2017. Listen in to “Horoscope” below and see if a new favorite band is in your future.
