As Deadline reports, John Wick director David Leitch has officially signed on to helm Deadpool 2, ending weeks of speculation over who would take original director Tim Miller’s place. Miller quit the production last month over what insiders said were creative differences with the film’s star, Ryan Reynolds, and fans immediately began petitioning for a replacement to their liking. Quentin Tarantino was a popular, albeit unlikely, choice, though Drew Goddard and Magnus Martens were also in the running to direct the superhero sequel.
Leitch is an inspired choice to take over the production, having proven his flair for fun, hyper-violent action sequences with his work on John Wick. The Keanu Reeves-starring film became an instant cult classic and even spawned a sequel of its own, directed by Leitch’s partner on the original, Chat Stahelski, and hitting theaters February 10th. Given the gleefully R-rated similarities between Deadpool and John Wick, we’d say Deadpool 2 is in good hands.
