Los Campesinos! announce new album, share “I Broke Up in Amarante” — listen

Plus, the UK outfit will tour North America and Europe next year

On February 24th, Los Campesinos! will return with Sick Scenes, their first album in over three years. The 11-track collection will be released via Wichita Recordings and features production from guitarist Tom Bromley and longtime collaborator John Goodmanson (Sleater-Kinney, Death Cab for Cutie).

According to a press statement, the follow-up to 2013’s No Blues represents “an expression of the pent-up aggression we [the band] felt due to being inactive for so long, but it’s also a celebration of just getting to be a band, of getting to play music with our friends.” It was recorded in Fridao, Portugal during Euro 2016.

As a preview, the UK indie pop outfit has shared the frenetic, pop-punk-leaning lead single “I Broke Up in Amarante” today. Frontman Gareth Campesinos! told Pitchfork that the song was about “battling with bad mental health, trying to comfort and reason with yourself over something you can’t control.”

He added, “Specifically it’s about how my main coping mechanism was to keep myself constantly drunk in the blistering heat of Amarante while being failed by a largely terrible international football tournament.” Listen below.

In support of of the new album, Los Campesinos have lined up a lengthy tour across both North America and Europe. Find the dates below the artwork and tracklist.
