Marvel announces TV adaptation of The Inhumans, to debut in IMAX theaters

A first-of-its-kind deal will bring the show to IMAX screens before moving to ABC

When Marvel Studios first announced its plans for Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, an Inhumans movies was scheduled for November 2nd, 2018. However, the film got pushed back to an unspecified date before falling off the schedule entirely. Now we know why: Marvel has officially announced The Inhumans TV series set to air on ABC after making its debut in IMAX theaters.

The show is the result of an unprecedented deal which finds IMAX becoming a financing participant in a television series for the first time. The agreement will bring the first two episodes of The Inhumans, shot entirely on IMAX digital cameras, into IMAX theaters for a two-week run in early September 2017. (So, in a way, we sort of are still getting an Inhumans movie.) After that, the series will move to its ABC home later in the fall, with the first two episodes airing with “exclusive content” only available on the network.

Created by the legendary duo of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1965, The Inhumans are a race of super-powered beings that are the result of alien experiments on early humans. Much like the X-Men, their powers come in various forms, and often are even stranger than mutants (if you can believe it). The TV series will focus on the popular Inhumans royal family from the comic books led by the enigmatic Black Bolt, whose voice is so destructive that even a whisper can topple buildings.

The Inhumans were introduced as a major component of Marvel’s other ABC series, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., last season and continue to play a prominent role. It has yet to be announced if any of the Inhumans from that show — such as lead character Daisy “Quake” Johnson (played by Chloe Bennet) — will appear on the new series. As always, it will be interesting to see how the show plays into the larger MCU as a whole.
