As Hollywood’s highest-grossing actress, Scarlett Johansson continues to find herself attached to new projects big and small. The latest in a recent string of marquee deals she’s signed on for is an adaptation of the 1950s thriller novel Tangerine coming from producer George Clooney.
Deadline reports that Imperative Entertainment won the auction for the rights to adapt Christine Mangan’s debut novel on Monday. Clooney will produce through his Smokehouse Pictures alongside his partner Grant Heslov and Imperative’s Bradley Thomas and Dan Friedkin.
Set in exotic Morocco during the ’50s, the story finds a woman named Alice attempting to move on with her life after the death of her fiancé in college. Years later, she reconnects with her college roommate, Lucy, when suddenly her husband turns up missing. Realizing that something horrible happens to the men in her life whenever Lucy is around, Alice begins to wonder if Lucy is as dangerous as she fears of if it’s all in her head. It’s unclear which woman Johansson will play.
ScarJo’s slate also includes the potential franchise launcher Ghost in the Shell coming early next year, and she’s set to star as Zelda Fitzgerald in one of two competing pictures currently in the works. (Jennifer Lawrence will play F. Scott Fitzgerald’s wife in Ron Howard’s take on the story.)
