Spice Girls offshoot GEM unveil debut single “Song for Her” — listen

Geri Halliwell, Emma Bunton, and Mel B stage a comeback 20 years after "Wannabe"

Earlier this year, three members of the iconic British pop group Spice Girls — Emma Bunton, Geri Horner, and Melanie Brown, a.k.a. Baby, Ginger, and Scary Spice — released a video celebrating the 20th anniversary of their first single, “Wannabe”, and teasing some sort of comeback. The trio concurrently launched a new website called Spice Girls GEM (thought to stand for Geri, Emma, Mel B), leading many to believe that the “comeback” would really be a new group minus two of the original Spice Girls, Posh (Victoria Beckham) and Sporty (Melanie Chisholm).

As NME reports, the three Spice Girls’ new single as GEM has now leaked online. It’s called “Song for Her” and shows that the Girls’ sound has been updated to reflect 21st century pop sensibilities. With its palm-muted indie guitar riffs, anthemic ‘whoa-oh”s, and an EDM-inspired chorus that lands halfway between Walk the Moon’s “Shut Up and Dance” and Katy Perry’s “Roar”, “Song for Her” is clearly trying to steer its way into millennials’ hearts. Seems a bit crass on first listen, but these things have a way of wiggling themselves into your head.

Check it out below.

Though nothing has yet been confirmed, several UK tabloids report plans for a Spice Girls — er, GEM — reunion at London’s Hyde Park next summer.
