Tyler, the Creator and Earl Sweatshirt perform surprise EarlWolf set at Camp Flog Gnaw — watch

The collaboration that never was returns for an all-too brief performance

The members of the Odd Future crew have largely focused on solo careers since breaking onto the scene in 2010. Sure, there are still groups like The Internet and MellowHigh out there doing their things, but the anchor players like Tyler, the Creator and Earl Sweatshirt don’t often find themselves doing collaborative work anymore. During this weekend’s Camp Flog Gnaw, however, those two figureheads re-teamed for a surprise performance as the never-quite-was duo EarlWolf.

A thirty-minute block on the Flog Gnaw schedule was left blank, with many predicting an appearance from Frank Ocean. Instead, Tyler and Earl came together for an 11-minute EarlWolf set, during which they performed “Orange Juice”, the only track they ever officially recorded as a duo, and a number of old Odd Future cuts. They also were joined by Domo Genesis to deliver “Rusty” from Tyler’s Wolf , during which Tyler forgot the lyrics and delivered 12 bars of impressive freestyle instead. At one point, a full EarlWolf album was in consideration, but Tyler said in 2014 that he was “not in the mindframe to do a whole album of that shit.” The tide might be turning, though, considering the duo’s appearance this past weekend and at Calgary rap festival One Love back in September.

In related news, Tyler has shared the trailer for his forthcoming documentary, Cherry Bomb, which chronicles the making of his latest solo LP. The 45-minute film will see release in January.
