Sylvester Stallone’s career as of late has largely been based on nostalgia. While some of that has worked out well (see: Creed), not every choice he’s made has led to a hit (see: Grudge Match). However, the actor has now seemingly made his greatest career move in years by turning down an offer to work in President-Elect Donald Trump’s White House.
Trump was said to be readying an offer to ask Stallone to chair the National Endowment for the Arts, a position which would put him in charge of all governmental arts funding in the country. Before a handshake could even be extended, though, Stallone issued a statement saying he wouldn’t accept the job.
Delivered by his publicist on Sunday, the statement said Stallone is “incredibly flattered to have been suggested to be involved with the National Endowment of the Arts. However I believe I could be more effective by bringing national attention to returning military personnel in an effort to find gainful employment, suitable housing and financial assistance these heroes respectfully deserve.” (via Variety)
This is just another example of Trump being unable to rally the support of any sort of credible celebrity figure. Even after resorting to bribery, he’s only been able to nail down operatic pop singer Andrea Bocelli and 16-year-old former America’s Got Talent contestant Jackie Evancho to perform at his inauguration. Thing is, Evancho has already performed for Obama — twice — and Stallone is actually a Republican and fan of Trump, and he still wants nothing to do with him.
And people thought he’d played one two many concussed boxers to make a smart decision anymore.
