Moonlight named Best Picture at 2016 Chicago Film Critics Association Awards

Manchester by the Sea, Jackie, and The Handmaiden also win big at the ceremony

It’s a good year for cinema.

Last night, the Chicago Film Critics Association (CFCA) hosted their 27th annual year-end awards dinner. Barry Jenkins’ coming-of-age drama Moonlight won three of its 11 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actor for Mahershala Ali.

Although it didn’t claim the top spots, Kenneth Lonergan’s  hearty drama Manchester by the Sea won the most awards, snagging four of its eight nominations, including Best Actor for Casey Affleck, Best Supporting Actress for Michelle Williams, Best Original Screenplay, and Most Promising Performer for Lucas Hedges.

Other highlights included Best Actress for Natalie Portman in Jackie; Best Foreign-Language Film, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Art Direction for Park Chan-Wook’s The Handmaiden; Best Editing and Best Cinematography for Damien Chazelle’s La La Land; and Best Original Score for Mica Levi’s chilling work on Jackie.

Surprisingly, Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival and Paul Verhoeven’s Elle were completely shut out, despite its three nominations each.
