Today, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences revealed the nominees for the 2017 Grammy Awards. Now in its 59th year, the ceremony recognizes the best recordings, compositions, and artists of the eligibility year (Oct. 1st, 2015 – Sept. 30th, 2016).
Of the major categories, Beyoncé and Adele are each nominated for Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Record of the Year.
Beyoncé’s Lemonade and Adele’s 25 will compete for Album of the Year alongside Drake’s Views and Justin Bieber’s Purpose. A surprise inclusion, Sturgill Simpson’s A Sailor’s Guide to Earth also received an Album of the Year nomination.
Beyoncé’s “Formation” and Adele’s “Hello” are up for both Song of the Year and Record of the Year. The latter category also boasts Drake and Rihanna’s “Work”.
Chance the Rapper and Anderson .Paak both received nominations for Best New Artist.
In all, Queen Bey receive the most nominations with nine. She’s also up for Best Urban Contemporary Album (Lemonade), Best Pop Solo Performance (“Hold Up”), Best Music Video (“Formation”), Best Music Film (Lemonade), and … Best Rock Performance (“Don’t Hurt Yourself”), where she’s nominated alongside David Bowie and Disturbed (?).
In addition to Best New Artist, Chance the Rapper scored nods for Best Rap Performance (“No Problem”), Best Rap/Sung Performance (“Ultralight Beam”), Best Rap Song (“No Problem” and “Ultralight Beam”), and Best Rap Album (Coloring Book). Had it not been for a last-minute rule change allowing for streaming-only releases to be nominated, the Chicago rapper wouldn’t have even been nominated.
David Bowie received five posthumous nominations: Best Alternative Album (Blackstar), Best Rock Performance (“Blackstar), Best Rock Song (“Blackstar”), Best Recording Package (Blackstar), Best Engineered Album (Blackstar).
Other Alternative Album of the Year nominees include Bon Iver’s 22, A Million, PJ Harvey’s The Hope Six Demolition Project, Iggy Pop’s Post Pop Depression, and Radiohead’s A Moon Shaped Pool.
Along with Alternative Album of the Year, Radiohead scored a nomination for Best Rock Song with “Burn the Witch”.
Other notable nominees include Parquet Courts, who earned a Grammy nod for Best Recording Package; Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein, a.k.a. S U R V I V E, whose two-volume soundtrack to Netflix’s Stranger Things captured a pair of nominations in the Best Score Soundtrack For Visual Media category; and Blink-182, whose Best Alternative Album candidate California marked their first-ever Grammy nominee.

The 2017 Grammy Awards take place on Sunday, February 12th, 2017 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The ceremony will be broadcast live on CBS, hosted by James Corden.
