Netflix has released the trailer for its latest original film, iBoy. It’s a slight twist on the standard superhero origin story, combined with some teen romance. The movie is about Tom (Bill Milner), an average teenager whose whole world changes after a violent attack by a local gang.
After waking up from a coma, Tom finds out the encounter left fragments of his shattered smartphone in his brain, resulting in a strange set of superpowers. The newfound abilities allow him to see and hear the internet and phone calls.
Tom vows to use his new powers to seek revenge on the gang, who also attacked his best friend / love interest Lucy (Game of Thrones’ Maisie Williams). Naturally, in the course of his quest, Lucy is taken hostage and needs to be rescued.
While the title leaves something to be desired, iBoy shows promise with its unique riff on the “nerd gains powers and becomes a vigilante” genre. It will be available on Netflix globally beginning January 27th, 2017.
