The former Oasis rocker’s second solo effort to date follows As You Were from 2017. It was penned by Gallagher with assistance from producers Andrew Wyatt (of Miike Snow) and Greg Kurstin, both of whom also had a hand in his solo debut LP. Why Me? Why Not. was then recorded in both Los Angeles and London.
In a statement, Gallagher explained his decision to bring back the talents of Wyatt and Kurstin:
“I wrote some songs on my own for the last album, but this time it’s all co-writes. Reason being is I want it to be even better than As You Were. I know my strengths and I know my limitations. I’m an ok songwriter, but I’m a great singer and frontman. I want the second album to be a step-up because the hardest thing to do is to make something the same, only better. So that’s what we’ve done.”
In her album review, Consequence of Sound writer Meghan Roos praised, “Gallagher embraces acceptance on a deeper level with this album than we’ve seen before… Why Me? Why Not. revels in the joy Gallagher seems to feel whenever he makes music, an album written by an experienced artist who’s determined to prove the fun doesn’t have to end with Act One.”
To coincide with the new project, Gallagher released a documentary last week dubbed As It Was. The film chronicles the rise and fall of Gallagher’s career, especially in the years immediately following Oasis’ breakup in 2009.
In support of both projects, Gallagher will be on the road for the next few months, including on a smattering of dates supporting The Who. Grab your tickets here.
