Rising pop duo Overcoats have shared two new songs, “Leave if You Wanna” and “Keep the Faith”. The tracks compose the debut project for their new label home Loma Vista Records, which is out on vinyl December 6th.
Hana Elion and JJ Mitchell formed Overcoats in a Wesleyan dorm room in 2015, and picked up a bit of heat with their 2017 EP Young. These new songs are a bit of a departure from those earlier folk-inflected pop efforts, showing the band expanding on their sound. The Brooklyn duo is indeed moving into more upmarket electropop, halfway between art-for-arts-sake and slick Swedish commercialism. “Leave if You Wanna” is soaring synthpop just itching for a fight, while “Keep the Faith” is sweet, nostalgic, and radio friendly.
To mark this new creative period in the projects’ life, Elion and Mitchell have both shaved their heads. The new look can be seen in the Zev Deans-created music videos accompanying “Keep the Faith” and “Leave if You Wanna”. Check out both visuals below.
Overcoats are wrapping up a tour with Two Door Cinema Club, with two final shows this Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are available here. Pre-orders of Overcoat’s new limited edition red-and-clear vinyl are ongoing.
