What led to an American film being declared a subversive Communist plot? That’s the mystery being explored in the new Audible Originals series The Big Lie, a seven-part audio journey about the making of the only movie on the “Hollywood Blacklist,” Salt of the Earth.

The Big Lie, featuring an impressive cast of actors including Jon Hamm, Kate Mara, Ana de la Reguera, John Slattery, Bradley Whitford, Lisa Edelstein, Giancarlo Esposito, and David Strathairn, premieres Thursday, June 16th, and Consequence is happy to exclusively premiere a clip from the thrilling podcast.

The clip below features Jon Hamm as Jack Bergin, an FBI agent seeking to shut down the presumably scandalous production, and Kate Mara as Honor Bergin, his wife. The argument begins with Hamm questioning Mara about a fight with a cop — however, she quickly shrugs off the accusations and blames it on her low tolerance for alcohol.

Said The Big Lie executive producer John Mankiewicz in a statement, “Because this was such an important story of a dark, complicated time in a divided America, I’ve always felt I owed it to Paul Jarrico and all the victims of the ‘Hollywood Blacklist’ to get it told in the best possible way.”

Added Hamm, “Getting to both act in and executive produce this series was very rewarding. And getting to tell this story over audio, in a format that mirrors the way audiences might have actually heard it over the radio in the 1950s, made it all the more authentic.”

The Big Lie explores the essence of humanity and provides new insight into one of the film industry’s most controversial periods. Listen below to the exclusive clip — the podcast premieres on Audible Thursday, June 16th.
