MUNA were the musical guest on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Monday night, where they performed “Kind of Girl,” a cut from their upcoming self-titled album. Watch a replay below.
Accompanied by slide guitar and violin, “Kind of Girl” dips a toe into country as vocalist Katie Gavin sings about self-acceptance with slow-burning passion. With lyrics like, “I’m the kind of girl/ Who owns up to all of my faults/ Who’s learning to laugh at ’em all/ Like I’m not a problem to solve,” it’s easy to get caught up in all the emotion.
“This song explores the power of language and the words we use to describe who we are and who we want to be,” Gavin said about “Kind of Girl” in a previous press statement. “Even though it is a happy, hopeful song, I shed the most tears of the record in the vocal booth recording this chorus. I think there’s something very vulnerable about plainly expressing my desire to be kinder to myself and comfortable receiving love (and my desire to garden even though I kill everything I plant).”
MUNA arrives June 24th via Phoebe Bridgers’ Saddest Factory Records. The indie pop trio are set to open for their label head on tour this month before they head out on a headlining trek of their own; get tickets to see them live via Ticketmaster. In addition to the singles “Anything But Me,” which they performed on Ellen, and “Kind of Girl,” MUNA recently covered Britney Spears’ “Sometimes” for the soundtrack to the Hulu film Fire Island.
