Come up, Barbie, let’s go party: Warner Bros. has shared the first look at Ryan Gosling as a real-life Ken doll in Greta Gerwig’s forthcoming Barbie movie. Behold the glory of his beach blonde hair, washboard abs, and spray tan below. Gossling stars opposite Margot Robbie’s Barbie, who received a first look of her own back in April.
Though the plot has been kept under wraps, Barbie is rumored to feature several other Barbie and Ken characters. The cast is rounded out by Simu Liu, America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Alexandra Shipp, Emma Mackey, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Issa Rae, Michael Cera, and Will Ferrell.
In addition to directing the movie, Gerwig co-wrote the script with frequent collaborator (and real-life partner) Noah Baumbach. Barbie hits US theaters on July 21st, 2023.
To the disappointment of many, Aqua’s “Barbie Girl” won’t be featured in the film, likely due to the strained relationship between the Danish band and Mattel. Aqua’s US label, MCA Records, was sued by the toy company for trademark infringement and responded by filing a lawsuit of their own. Ultimately, United States Court of Appeals circuit judge Alex Kozinski literally advised both parties “to chill” while dismissing both claims.
Next up, Gosling is set to play former CIA agent Court Gentry in The Russo Brothers’ The Gray Man co-starring Chris Evans and Ana de Armas.
