Emmy Nominations 2022

In the era of so much TV, each Emmy Awards nominations morning brings with it a degree of chaos. In 2022, that remains consistent, though there are familiar faces returning to the dance as well as fresh voices.

As many predicted, the third season of Succession (which dominated in 2020) was the nominations count leader with 25, including what feels like a metric ton of acting nominations across nearly all categories. Meanwhile, Netflix’s three big plays in the drama series category — Ozark, Stranger Things, and Squid Game — didn’t perform outrageously well.

All did secure Outstanding Drama Series nods, though, and with 14 nominations for Squid Game and 13 each for Ozark and Stranger Things, that’s nothing to sneeze at. Apple TV+’s Severance (Consequence‘s best show of 2022 so far) also picked up 14 nominations.

In the world of comedy, it was a good morning to be a soccer coach, a stand-up comedian, or a murder podcaster: Ted Lasso, Hacks, and Only Murders In the Building showed up in a big way with 20 nominations for the Jason Sudeikis-starring comedy, and 17 each for the HBO Max and Hulu series. (The biggest surprise of the morning — Selena Gomez getting shut out for Only Murders — in a just world, that series’ count would be 18, not 17.)

Also, as evidence that broadcast television can still break in sometimes, ABC’s Abbott Elementary charmed its way into the hearts of Emmys voters with seven nominations, including three individual nominations for star/creator Quinta Brunson (a first for a Black woman in the comedy categories).

As for limited series, it was Hulu that proved to be a real force this year, with Dopesick, The Dropout, and Pam & Tommy all receiving nominations alongside Netflix’s Inventing Anna and HBO’s The White Lotus. All five shows also got plenty of attention for their star-studded casts.

Check out the full list of nominations below. The awards themselves will be handed out Monday, September 12th, 2022. No host has been announced yet for the ceremony.
