With squad cars that nice, how can you not keep coming back for more? Eddie Murphy has begun production on the fourth installment in the Beverly Hills Cop franchise, which Deadline reports will co-star Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Taylour Paige.
Update – September 21st: Original Beverly Hills Cop cast members Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Paul Reiser, and Bronson Pinchot will also return for the upcoming sequel.
Update – September 28th: Kevin Bacon has also joined the cast.
This fourth film about streetwise police officer Axel Foley has been in the works since, oh, about 1994, when Beverly Hills Cop 3 earned $120 million on a $50 million budget. As recently as 2016 it was moving forward with writer-directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, known today for Ms. Marvel and the unceremoniously canned Batgirl.
Now, Mark Molloy will direct in his feature film debut, and the script comes from Aquaman scribe Will Beall. The movie has been titled Beverly Hills Cop: Alex Foley, and has moved from Paramount Pictures to Netflix, which kicked off Murphy’s third act with 2019’s Dolemite Is My Name.
Murphy has been on a nostalgic kick with his recent films, starring in the sequel Coming 2 America in 2021. Up next, he’ll act opposite Jonah Hill in the Kenya Barris-directed Netflix comedy You People, which is tentatively scheduled for a 2022 release.
As for Gordon-Levitt, he was recently cast as Johnny Carson in a biopic series, and he also joined Natasha Lyonne in Rian Johnson’s upcoming Poker Face. Meanwhile, Paige has become an in-demand actor after starring in A24’s Zola.
