Alt-J sat down with Consequence at at Mad Cool Festival 2022 for a conversation about reconnecting with audiences, traveling the world again, and how they enjoyed their time in Spain’s capital city.
“It’s always nice playing to an audience of people that aren’t captive, that you have to win over,” says lead vocalist Joe Newman. “There’s still so many parts of the world we want to go to and stamp our passports.” Emphasizing their excitement to be back on the road for a packed festival season coming out of the full-stop of the pandemic, the bandmates expressed how thrilled they were to see the huge, enthusiastic crowd.
As a group that’s been together for 15 years, they’ve also seen plenty of trends in pop culture come and go. With that in mind, it must be asked: Is the fact that “Left Hand Free” was playing when Tom Holland first appeared as Peter Parker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as important to the band as it might be to fans of Spider-Man and the MCU? Turns out the answer is definitely yes.
