Trying to get a straight answer out of Zakk Wylde is no easy task, but it makes for one hilarious interview. The Black Label Society frontman and Ozzy Osbourne guitarist took us on a wylde ride of anal bleaching, puke buckets, Paula Abdul choreography, and more when we caught up with him at the 2019 Sonic Temple festival.
In the video interview above, Wylde discusses Black Label Society’s recent 20th anniversary re-working of their debut album, Sonic Brew, the wacky new video for “Bored to Tears”, plans for the next BLS album, and his interaction with the crowd during live shows. Except, we’re not sure he told us any actual facts regarding any of the above.
When it came to his decision to re-record Sonic Brew 20 years after its release, Wylde commented, “The thought process was when we listened to it 20 years ago, I got violently ill, and threw up a batch … 20 years later, the ’20th Anniversary Blend’, it’s actually more vomit, and I get more deathly ill every time I listen to it, so I guess it must be even more horrendous that it was the first time around.”
On his decision to call Black Label Society’s most recent studio album Grimmest Hits, Wylde said, “Well, I won the bet, because everyone said, ‘You can’t call this Grimmest Hits, because it’s going to get confused with a greatest-hits record, and I go, ‘No, because we have no hits, and especially no great ones.”
And what about his dynamic live performances, where he often goes into the crowd to play incredible guitar solos? “I can’t take credit for it,” Wylde told us. “I give full credit to Paula Abdul and Diana Ross, who I work closely with. And I’ve been working with them ever since I started with [Ozzy] back in ’87. They’re great trainers, great choreographers, and I can’t thank ’em enough.”
