CHVRCHES do not want to die in California. This is both true for Lauren Mayberry and Martin Doherty — who chose to stay in Los Angeles throughout the pandemic instead of their native Scotland — and a line on the group’s fourth studio album, Screen Violence.
While in lockdown, and with third member Iain Cook back home in Scotland, the synth pop outfit dove head first into the production of Screen Violence, imbuing the album with a darker edge and more urgency than usual.
They’re also gearing up for their North American tour throughout November and December of this year, and are incredibly eager to get out and play shows again. “I’m very excited and really hopeful that we can make those shows happen safely,” says Mayberry. “I feel like touring has always been such an important part of CHVRCHES… it’s always felt like doing the miles on the road and seeing people face to face has been such an important part of it.”
Consequence caught up with CHVRCHES to talk about the making of Screen Violence and their experiences in lockdown last year. They also reflect on ten years together as a band and share, well, some hot takes.
