Brian Posehn was a metalhead long before he was a celebrated actor-comedian. The funnyman grew up on heavy music, and recently released his own comedic music album, Grandpa Metal.
Posehn worked on the album with main collaborators Scott Ian of Anthrax, Joe Trohman of Fall Out Boy, and Metalocalypse mastermind Brendon Small. The LP also features such metal luminaries as Slipknot’s Corey Taylor, Slayer’s Gary Holt, Testament’s Alex Skolnick, Amon Amarth’s Johan Hegg, and Soundgarden’s Kim Thayil, among several other guests.
We recently sat down with Posehn to discuss Grandpa Metal, his introduction to metal, and more. As he tells us in the video interview above, “I didn’t just buy a Metallica shirt for $100 on Melrose, I’ve liked this shit since I was a kid.”
Posehn further explains that he “grew up in a perfect time” for metal. “My favorite stuff wound up being thrash metal,” he says. “When all those bands came out, I was going to see them in the Bay Area. … I saw Testament in the old days, I saw Exodus and Death Angel and all those bands.”
Regarding Grandpa Metal, Posehn admits he’s still blown away that all these legendary musicians agreed to guest on the album. “I can’t believe it worked out,” exclaims Posehn. “I don’t know why all these guys said ‘yes’.”
