Corey Taylor released his debut solo album, CMFT, last year during the pandemic, and has now turned his attention to the next Slipknot LP. He will also be returning to the road with Slipknot this fall on the “Knotfest Roadshow” tour, after he completes another leg of his solo tour in August.
We recently caught up with the prolific singer via Zoom to talk about his contribution to the new Anthrax graphic novel Among the Living (which can be seen in part 1 of our video interview), but he was also kind enough to discuss the return of live music, his thoughts on COVID-19 vaccinations, and what to expect from Slipknot’s upcoming album.
Taylor was one of the first major artists to embark on a tour as COVID-19 restrictions started to ease in the United States, completing a monthlong solo run in May and June.
“We’ve all been stuck in our caves for a year and a half, and we just needed that release,” Taylor told us of his decision to book the spring tour. “So, I knew if I didn’t take the chance, nobody else was going to … We were so determined to make sure we were doing it right that, in a lot of ways, we didn’t start enjoying the tour until halfway through it … All you had to do was see the excitement on the audience’s faces to realize it was the right thing to do.”
He added, “People don’t realize that I didn’t make a dime on this tour, not one. It was more important to me to get this thing going than it was to make money.”

As mentioned, Slipknot are working on a new album, with Taylor telling us, “It’s an expansion of where we were at on We Are Not Your Kind. This band has always prided itself on expanding boundaries, expanding our musical vision. It’s got the heavy — there’s so many different elements on this one. Let’s just say I’m really excited to get the vocals going on it.”
