Halestorm have come a long way since siblings Lzzy and Arejay Hale started playing music together as youngsters in Pennsylvania. This summer, the Grammy-winning rock band will support their most recent album, Vicious, by co-headlining a U.S. tour with the legendary Alice Cooper.

We caught up with frontwoman Lzzy Hale and bassist Josh Smith at Sonic Temple Festival in Ohio, and the pair talked about the honor of co-headlining with Alice Cooper. “It’s really surreal because I consider him the ‘A’ and the ‘ABCs’ of my rock ‘n’ roll vocabulary. He taught me what it means to be a weirdo, and absolutely stand up for that and be proud of that,” Lzzy told us in the video interview above.

She added, “It’s weird to listen to songs that I have like ‘Mz. Hyde’ and ‘Freak Like Me’, and definitely, that came from the Alice Cooper side of my influences. [It’s cool] just to be able to be co-headlining with rock royalty, and one of the nicest guys in the rock industry, by the way.”

When we informed Lzzy that she may need to work on her golf game, given Cooper’s skills on the links, Lzzy replied, “My entire golf experience has been one handicap. I hit it like a hockey puck. It’s just terrible …. but if he can show me some pointers, sure!”

As far as plans beyond the band’s touring this year, which also includes a fall run with Godsmack, Smith told us, “Probably going to be working on some new music, maybe some cover songs”, with Lzzy adding, “We’ve been writing a lot of originals lately, too, so we’ve been [debating] cover album or just new album. It could go either way.” That prompted Smith to joke, “We’re gonna cover ourselves!”
