Welcome to the latest edition of Masterpiece Reviews. Once again, we’ve thrown on our favorite velvet robe, turned up the fire, and are here to regale you with stories of the greatest and most classic albums of all time. It’s a fresh, new perspective on why these albums are filed under “M” for masterpiece.
This is the first time on Masterpiece Reviews dedicated to a live album. Naturally, we focus on one of music’s greatest live bands, Grateful Dead, and their 1969 release Live/Dead, which marked the first time the band’s wild, jam-based shows were captured on tape. The end result is a study of psychedelic rock that features what critic Robert Christgau would call “the finest rock improvisation ever recorded.”
