Masterpiece Reviews: “N.W.A – Straight Outta Compton”

Hip-hop's most dangerous and influential album

Welcome to the latest edition of Masterpiece Reviews. Once again, we’ve thrown on our favorite velvet robe, turned up the fire, and are here to regale you with stories of the greatest and most classic albums of all time. It’s a fresh, new perspective on why these albums are filed under “M” for masterpiece.

To coincide with the release of the new N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton, we revisit the album that inspired the film’s name. The group’s debut album was released August 8th, 1988, launching the careers of Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, and MC Ren, eventually going double platinum, pioneering the “gangsta rap” subgenre, and forever changing the landscape of hip-hop.
