Masterpiece Reviews: Nas – “Illmatic”

Fall into the right state of mind when listening to this timeless hip-hop album

Welcome to the latest edition of Masterpiece Reviews. Once again, we’ve thrown on our favorite velvet robe, turned up the fire, and are here to regale you with stories of the greatest and most classic albums of all time. It’s a fresh, new perspective on why these albums are filed under “M” for masterpiece.

In 1994, an upstart rapper named Nasir Jones revolutionized hip-hop with the release of his debut album, Illmatic. The MC, more commonly known as Nas, spoke honestly and openly about his life growing up in the housing projects of Queensbridge, New York. The rich lyrics were accompanied by trailblazing beats from Q-Tip, DJ Premier, and Pete Rock. Illmatic helped to revitalize the East Coast rap scene in the 90s and today is considered to be the greatest hip-hop album of all time.
