Welcome to the latest edition of Masterpiece Reviews. Once again, we’ve thrown on our favorite velvet robe, turned up the fire, and are here to regale you with stories of the greatest and most classic albums of all time. It’s a fresh, new perspective on why these albums are filed under “M” for masterpiece.
Following the release of their second studio album, Meat Is Murder, The Smiths returned to the studio to begin work on their follow-up, The Queen Is Dead. With songs like “Frankly, Mr. Shankly”, “I Know It’s Over”, and “There Is A Light That Never Goes Out”, the album boldly went after the monarchy, their own record label, Rough Trade, and critics who accused Morrissey of plagiarism. Today it’s widely considered The Smiths’ pinnacle release not to mention one of the best albums of the 1980s. Some publications have even declared it the best album ever recorded.
