Portugal. The Man on the Impact of Nirvana’s Nevermind: It “Literally Made Me Pick Up a Guitar”

"That album absolutely changed my life," says the band's Zach Carothers

Portugal The Man Nirvana Nevermind

Portugal. The Man may hail from the cold environs of Alaska, but Nirvana’s Nevermind was a blast of heat that warmed their hearts and souls.

When Consequence caught up with the band’s Eric Howk and Zach Carothers last month about their contribution to the Metallica covers album, they also shared their thoughts on how Nevermind changed their lives and inspired them to be professional musicians.

“You know, I’d listen to Metallica, and Metallica’s fucking hard, but I listened to Nevermind and I was like, ‘Oh shit, man, maybe I could do this,'” says Carothers.

As Nevermind celebrates its 30th anniversary, its enduring influence on musicians of all genres is a testament to how magical and transcendent those songs are.
